New planting and garden design for Upper East Side, Manhattan balcony garden. The plants needed to be shade tolerant and make the most of this small outdoor space. We used larger shrubs such as Pieres Hydrangea and Azalea; along with under plantings of Japanese Forest Grass, Huchera, and Ferns. Unfortunately there was no water source for a drip irrigation sprinkler system, so these plants will rely on hand watering. Good thing its a shady spot!
